Friesian
The black Friesian is a coldblooded breed which originated in the Netherlands. This breed is an impressive harness horse, and looks equally as good under saddle. This breed's good temperament and looks make it popular with circus trainers. The Friesian stands at 15 hands or more. The Friesian was first decsended from the primitive European Forest Horse. It was first used as a warhorse. Later, it was crossed with oriental horses and Spanish horses, which improved the breed. Throughout Europe, monarchs used Friesians to pull their carriages. The riding schools of Paris and Spain favored the Friesian in the 15th and 16th centuries. The world almost lost the Friesian breed. Only three stallions remained after World War I. Luckily, this breed endured. The Friesian registry is very strict. The only recognized color is black. The only white marking allowed is a small star on the forehead. The breed is easily recognized by it's black coloration, full mane, strong shoulders, expressive face, and feathering on the lower legs. Image is courtesy of Gray Friesian Farm.
